Saturday 30th September 2017 saw the 5th running of the IQO’s annual Irish Open quiz. Over 2 dozen quizzers crammed into the back room of the Addison Lodge in Dublin’s northside to find the best quizzer in Ireland. This year was notable for a couple of reasons: firstly, we didn’t know it at the time but this would be the last event held in the IQO’s favourite venue the Addison Lodge – shortly after this the pub was sold for redevelopment (it was subsequently demolished and is now an apartment block).
Secondly, in addition to the usual cream of Irish quizzing talent we had a couple of special guests over from England for the day – quizzing power couple Oliver Levy and Paul Sinha – the latter particularly well known to TV viewers as “the Sinnerman” on TV quiz The Chase.
And as it turns out, being a professional TV quizzer certainly helps with your quizzing knowledge as Paul emerged triumphant on the day, scoring an impressive 164 out of 240, the highest score in the room, making him the 2017 Irish Quiz Open champion! In a close tussle for second place were previous champions Lorcan Duff and Mark Henry, Lorcan pipping Mark by just a single point, 159 to 158.

As always, the IQO offers the Irish Open for free to quiz associations around the world, and this year it was played by 75 players in 16 different venues: mainly in Europe but also the US, Oman, Kuwait, India and Malaysia. The top-scoring overseas player was Ole Martin Halck from Norway with 141 out of 240.
